March 2002 – Hands-on Students Learning the Positive Way

Local company Tania-Tapel Promotions have just volunteered their time to the new business dynamics initiative to bring business to life for students by running an interactive presentation. The first course to be run in Leicestershire is being held at New College Leicester during the 5th and 6th March.

As a successful role model for students, Anita Patel, proprietress from Tania-Tapel who specialise in event management and wedding services will talk to the youngsters and give them practical advice about the workplace. Anita’s area of speciality is marketing and has been asked to use her skills to teach the thirty 17 year olds about the marketing industry techniques and what an employer may be looking for from individuals when an interview is conducted.

Many youngsters these days have the wrong impression about business, the workplace, employment or even self-employment. Unless you are to be handed an established family business on a plate, the reality is the majority of us have to decide what careers are available to us. The students will be taught about the importance of job satisfaction in order to be happy with their lives, or what can happen when we become complacent or have other responsibilities that dictate what we end up doing as a career.

Anita had this to say about the BusinessDynamics programme and about her participation, “I felt it important to help youngsters who have this almost unreal perception of the workplace to understand the ‘real’ world. It seems that when most students are sent on work placements they come back having made numerous cups of teas and coffees, but not really acquiring any real hands-on experience for the job – no wonder they all want to work for themselves! If I have taught a student one bit of good advice and it leads them into having a more positive attitude just as people then my time will have been well spent. I know what I look for in employees, and it’s not always academic but certainly helps for the more prestigious positions in a company.”
